The BRIDGES Ocean Talks scientific webinar series presents its fourth session on Tuesday, 8th September 2026. Titled “Dialogue and participation among diverse stakeholders: Lessons from marine and coastal governance in the Western Indian Ocean region,” the webinar will provide a narrative exploration of the realities of regional marine management.
Featuring Dr. Philile Mbatha, a member of the BRIDGES Scientific Advisory Board, Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Town, and Deputy Director of the One Ocean Hub, this session will draw on concrete examples from rural coastal communities in South Africa and Mozambique. Dr. Mbatha will unpack the complex power dynamics and resource-use conflicts that shape coastal governance and highlight the importance of inclusive stakeholder engagement, effective communication, knowledge co-production, and relational skills in bridging the gap between science, policy, and practice.
