In 2025, WIOMSA directed its strategic focus toward bridging the divide between scientific research, decision-making, and implementation across the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). Connecting knowledge and change, WIOMSA made significant strides in building shared evidence about a rapidly changing ocean; connecting institutions and people around shared priorities; turning evidence into choices, priorities and policy; and strengthening the practical capability needed to translate policy commitments and scientific knowledge into action.
Key achievements detailed in the report include:
- Bridging Science and Policy: Equipping 40 technical practitioners from seven nations to embed marine evidence into statutory Marine Spatial Planning frameworks, while uniting over 200 experts to inform the WIO Seagrass Status Report and Nairobi Convention regional strategy.
- Effective Protected Area Management: Modernizing conservation management through the Hifadhi Blu marine conservation grant, including establishing 50% women’s representation in Comoros’ Mitsamiouli-Ndroudé National Park co-management, and delivering the first Portuguese-language WIO-COMPAS certification in Mozambique.
- Investing in People: Upskilling 58 early-career ocean professionals across nine countries in scientific communication, advancing women’s marine leadership through targeted mentoring, and providing hands-on offshore research training aboard the OceanX/OceanQuest expedition.
- Regional Convening and Governance: Gathering 1,290 delegates from 43 countries at the 13th Scientific Symposium in Mombasa, alongside electing the 9th Board of Trustees at the 8th General Assembly to guide future institutional priorities.
