The Network for Women in Marine Science (WiMS), a WIOMSA initiative supporting women in marine science across the Western Indian Ocean, invites you to a webinar exploring gender-transformative approaches in marine conservation.
Taking place on Thursday, 1 October 2026, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. EAT, the session will draw on experiences from Kenya and Madagascar to examine how social norms, power relations and structural barriers shape participation and decision-making. It will also highlight practical pathways beyond women’s inclusion towards equitable and lasting change for coastal communities and conservation.
The webinar will feature Helen Anthem, Senior Technical Specialist for Gender at Fauna & Flora, and Quinn Parker, a PhD candidate in Stanford University’s Oceans Department. They will share insights from gender-transformative conservation work in Kenya and research connecting small-scale fisheries with food security, gender equality and community wellbeing in Madagascar. The webinar forms part of WiMS’s ongoing learning and professional development efforts, building on workshops and webinars held over the past two years.
