On October 19–20, 2026, WIOMPAN Country Chapter Chairs will convene in Maputo, Mozambique, to engineer the network’s inaugural Annual Status Snapshot. The Snapshot will provide a concise, evidence-based view of marine conservation areas and the people who manage them across WIOMPAN countries. It will consolidate current information on marine protected areas, national commitments for expansion, other effective area-based conservation measures, locally and community-managed marine areas, management systems, staffing, Country Chapter progress and priority support needs.
Additionally, the snapshot offers the network an opportunity to take a collective Western Indian Ocean perspective to the Sixth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC6). During the summit, leaders will strategize how to translate the Snapshot’s findings into compelling regional briefings and dynamic presentations for the global stage.
Look out for the October WIOMPAN Newsletter for more updates.
