The Coastal Ocean Environment School in the Western Indian Ocean (COES-WIO) is thrilled to open applications for its second year, to be held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Following a successful inaugural program in Mombasa, Kenya, COES-WIO continues to expand its regional impact. The program is modeled after the Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School in Nigeria and Ghana (COESSING; https://coessing.org/), which has been fostering oceanography skills and scientific capacity across West Africa since 2015.
COES-WIO offers a transformative learning experience in ocean science through a blended model that integrates foundational preparation with immersive, hands-on engagement. The program includes an intensive in-person week where participants will engage in fieldwork, laboratory analysis, data interpretation, collaborative project development, and research presentations. This experience is designed to strengthen practical skills, facilitate mentorship, and build lasting regional and international research networks that support continued growth in ocean sciences. We invite students, early-career researchers, mid-career professionals in ocean-related fields, and sectoral stakeholders to apply for this unique opportunity. Join the next cohort of COES-WIO and become part of a growing network of ocean science leaders advancing research, innovation, and collaboration across the Western Indian Ocean region.
The COES-WIO School will be held in person from September 20 to September 26, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with the possibility of a blended format in select project tracks. Together, these partnerships reflect a shared commitment to strengthening ocean science capacity, advancing regional collaboration, and cultivating the next generation of ocean researchers across the Western Indian Ocean region. University of Michigan, University of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania Fisheries & Research Institute, Marine Parks & Reserve-Tanzania, Sustainable Ocean Alliance Hub Tanzania, IOC Africa, Early Career Ocean Professional (ECOP), and Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) are all involved in creating the COES-WIO experience.
Together, these partnerships reflect a shared commitment to advancing ocean science capacity, strengthening regional collaboration, and cultivating the next generation of ocean researchers across the Western Indian Ocean.
This opportunity is now closed.
