Addressing the Western Indian Ocean’s complex transboundary challenges, from climate change to sustainable fisheries, requires more than robust biophysical marine science; it calls for the capacity to effectively engage across regional and global policy arenas.
To bridge this gap, WIOMSA, in partnership with IOCAFRICA, the Science Diplomacy Capital for Africa (SDCfA), the Sciences Sector of the UNESCO Office for Eastern Africa, and the Ocean Teacher Global Academy (OTGA), is pleased to announce a four-day onsite training on Ocean and Marine Science Diplomacy. Held as a pre-event to the Science Forum South Africa, this course is designed to translate scientific findings into actionable policy and strengthen regional cooperation.

Course Overview & Outcomes
The training brings together scientific and policy communities to build a unified community of practice. Delivery combines plenary sessions, group discussions, and practical exercises organized around four thematic clusters:
- Science diplomacy foundations and skills
- Spatial and biodiversity governance (including conservation planning and 30×30)
- Regional ocean challenges
- Enabling conditions for African leadership
Participants will explore key instruments shaping shared marine spaces including UNCLOS, the BBNJ Agreement, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and SDG 14. By the end of the training, attendees will be equipped to draft policy briefs, deliver oral briefings, and apply negotiation and stakeholder engagement techniques in simulated ocean governance settings.
Policymakers, government officials, academics, researchers, and representatives of civil society, industry and international organisations who are engaged in ocean, marine or Blue Economy governance are encouraged to apply. Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) across these sectors are particularly welcome.
