WIOMSA Newsbrief: May Issue Highlights Regional Progress in Capacity, Science, and Policy

The latest issue of the WIOMSA Newsbrief is now available, featuring a refreshed format and new segments aligned with the Association’s core programme pillars: Capacity, Science, and Policy. This edition also introduces a section dedicated to updates from WIOMSA member institutions, offering a comprehensive overview of regional initiatives.

Capacity Building: This issue addresses the region’s capacity gap and spotlights the Hifadhi Blu systems learning workshop held in Zanzibar. This pre-investment process put nine shortlisted sites through a thorough systems stress-test to ensure governance and financing readiness before grants are issued.

Policy Updates: Policy developments include the Western Indian Ocean Consortium (WIO-C) advancing a unified agenda for the upcoming Our Ocean Conference and Nairobi Convention COP 12. April’s seagrass meetings also contributed to regional alignment on a draft strategy for coordinated seagrass management.

Science Focus: In science, the Newsbrief covers the launch of WIO RESTORE—a three-year coral recovery programme in Kenya and Madagascar. It also shares warnings about collapsing Somali grouper stocks and highlights the HUDONET Action Plan for protecting the endangered Indian Ocean humpback dolphin.

Governance & Country News: Governance highlights include WIOMSA’s Board setting scalable priorities during their Seychelles meeting. Country news features the National Environment Management Council’s 40th-anniversary celebrations, marking decades of environmental oversight and new climate-resilience goals.

Concise yet comprehensive, this Newsbrief demonstrates the region’s commitment to strengthening systems, advancing scientific understanding, and coordinating policy responses to address environmental challenges.
