The 13th WIOMSA Symposium Highlights: Connecting People, Policy & Science for a Thriving Western Indian Ocean

Welcome to the highlights of the 13th WIOMSA Scientific Symposium, an endorsed UN Ocean Decade Activity and a beacon for regional and global collaboration. Under the theme One Ocean One Future: Connecting People, Policy, and Science for a Thriving Western Indian Ocean, this was the largest Symposium to date.

Held from September 28 to October 3, 2025, in Mombasa, Kenya, the event was co-organized by WIOMSA, the Nairobi Convention, Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), and UNESCO/IOC Sub-Commission for Africa and the Adjacent Islands (IOC AFRICA).

With nearly 1,200 participants from over 40 countries, the Symposium emphasized the importance of partnerships in shaping a sustainable future for the Western Indian Ocean and beyond. Join us as we showcase key moments, insights, and collaborations that are driving positive change in our oceans.
