Across the Western Indian Ocean, communities have long relied on generations of local wisdom to manage, protect, and sustain their marine and coastal resources. We now invite you to contribute to a regional effort to document and understand this invaluable Indigenous and Traditional Knowledge (ITK).
This short survey is designed to gather information on the different forms of local and traditional knowledge that shape how people interact with the ocean and coastlines. You don’t need to answer all the questions—just share what you know. You may already have insight into your community’s practices, or you may wish to speak to elders, fishers, or local groups before responding.
Please remember- do not share any information about individuals or information provided by them without their explicit permission. Participation should always be voluntary, and community members have the right to decide what information they wish to share.
Your input will help deepen our collective understanding of how communities across the WIO
care for the ocean—informing efforts to protect and manage these ecosystems for
generations to come.
