Tanzania took a significant step in harnessing the potential of its blue economy with the launch of a two-day workshop in Tanga on July 21st. Organized by the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) and the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), the event focused on promoting blue foods—such as fish, seaweed, and crabs—as vital resources for improving nutrition and ensuring food security across the region.
The workshop convened government officials, private sector representatives, and civil society groups to explore how aquatic resources from oceans, rivers, and lakes can bolster local economies and enhance public health.
In his opening remarks, Zanzibar’s Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries, Zahor Kassim Mohamed, emphasized the importance of aquatic foods in addressing malnutrition and supporting livelihoods. “Blue foods contribute to household income, employment, and food availability,” he stated.
Mr Mohamed highlighted that the Tanzanian government has invested in fish farming and aquaculture initiatives, with particular support for youth and women-led groups along the fisheries value chain.
NEMC Director General Dr. Immaculate Sware Semesi underscored the workshop’s goal of raising awareness about the nutritional benefits of blue foods and integrating these insights into national policies. She pointed out that expanding access and consumption of aquatic foods could be transformative in tackling malnutrition and promoting healthier populations.
WIOMSA’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Arthur Tuda, reaffirmed the organization’s focus on research and community education. He stressed the importance of sustainable harvesting practices and encouraged evidence-based policies that support nutrition security while safeguarding aquatic ecosystems.
Participants also discussed the environmental challenges facing aquatic ecosystems and the need for coordinated efforts across sectors to develop sustainable food systems. Notably, Tanzania is aligning its blue economy strategies with regional and international initiatives aimed at transforming food systems, demonstrating its commitment to leveraging ocean and water resources for sustainable national development.
