Seafood is a vital part of Tanzania’s diet, providing a significant source of dietary protein for its growing population. With increasing tourism and a booming hospitality industry, the demand for seafood continues to rise, highlighting the importance of responsible consumption. In response, the 2024 Tanzania Sustainable Seafood Guide has been developed specifically for tourism businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and operators across Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar. The Guide aims to raise awareness about vulnerable marine species and encourage shifts away from over-exploited and at-risk species that are crucial for maintaining marine biodiversity and ecosystem health.
To support widespread adoption, three printed products have been produced: a comprehensive guide, a pocketbook, and posters, all available in both English and Swahili. The Guide was created by Chumbe Island Coral Park with the support of the USAID Heshimu Bahari (Respect the Ocean) Project.
The launch of these materials is scheduled to take place at the 13th WIOMSA Scientific Symposium in Mombasa, providing an excellent platform to promote responsible seafood choices and marine conservation efforts across the region.
