Message from the WIOMPAN President, Mr. Allen Cedras

Since November 2024, WIOMPAN has convened virtually on two occasions, and these online engagements will continue to complement our in-person gatherings. We are pleased to report significant progress, particularly in strengthening the active involvement of our Chapter Leaders and in advancing Marine Protected Area (MPA) initiatives across the region.

We are especially encouraged by the success of the recent WIOMPAN exchange programme in Seychelles, which focused on sustainable financing for MPAs and the use of new technologies to enhance management effectiveness. Building on this momentum, we hope to host another exchange on the mainland of Africa in 2026.

The dedication and leadership of our Chapter Leaders remain central to the growth and consolidation of our network. WIOMPAN is steadily gaining recognition both regionally and globally. During the UNOC3 event in Nice, France, our work received strong appreciation, and several countries expressed interest in learning more about or joining our network. Notably, the Maldives has indicated its intention to join WIOMPAN.

This year’s WIOMPAN Chapter Leaders’ meeting was held alongside the WIOMSA Symposium, underscoring the importance of collaboration and networking. Chapter Leaders maximised this opportunity to exchange insights and best practices that will further strengthen the management and resilience of their marine conservation sites.

As we set our priorities for the coming year, we remain mindful of the ongoing challenges we face, including constraints related to training quality, equipment, and infrastructure.
