Seahorses are often used as flagship species for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), highlighting their importance in marine conservation. However, despite their iconic status, there’s surprisingly little known about how seahorses actually respond to protection measures. To fill this critical knowledge gap, Project Seahorse—based at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries at the University of British Columbia—alongside IUCN and the Species Survival Commission, is embarking on a global meta-analysis.
With a limited number of published studies, the project is turning to additional sources of data to enhance understanding on Seahorses. It is seeking seahorse observations and information collected from sites both inside and outside MPAs, spanning various time periods. Contributions can include grey literature, monitoring reports, personal observations, and other relevant data.
