Seychelles Charts Course Toward a Blue and Green Economy

Seychelles has taken a decisive step toward nature-positive development with the launch of “Enabling the Transition to a Blue and Green Economy in Seychelles,” a seven-year national project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) under GEF-8 and implemented in collaboration with UNDP and the Government of Seychelles’ Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Natural Resources (MECENR). Project Manager Mr. Allen Cedras leads implementation.

The project places biodiversity, ecosystem services, and natural capital at the centre of decision-making across tourism, food, and urban development sectors. Interventions span policy and governance reform, mobilizing finance for nature-based solutions, landscape and seascape implementation, and capacity development, including coral, mangrove, and seagrass restoration, waste management, and circular-economy actions.

The project is a national project of the UNDP-led Blue and Green Islands Integrated Programme, a USD 135.6 million GEF initiative spanning 15 Small Island Developing States.

July/August 2026 consultations with public- and private-sector stakeholders confirmed strong support. An inception workshop, held on 21 August 2026 at the Savoy Hotel, Beau Vallon, formally commenced implementation, validating the governance structure, first-year workplan, and monitoring arrangements that will guide delivery. Stakeholders emphasized timely disbursement, local capacity building, and coordination through existing institutions as keys to sustaining delivery momentum.
