As global commitments drive progress toward protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030, expanding designated boundaries alone is insufficient without strong, well-supported management systems. Blue Nature Alliance’s newly released video resource, Marine Protected Area Capacity Community of Practice, highlights the pressing need to invest in the marine conservation workforce and scale management capacity alongside spatial targets.
While global coverage expands, frontline staff and marine rangers often face increased workloads without proportional institutional support. Only a small fraction of the ocean is currently protected under fully operational management systems. To move past short term project interventions, the video outlines a collaborative global initiative uniting more than 100 practitioners across 40 organizations. This Community of Practice aims to shift management systems from the inside out by embedding capacity development permanently into conservation frameworks, strengthening ranger training in regions such as East Africa, and redirecting sustainable financing toward local leadership.
Marine practitioners, managers, and partners across the Western Indian Ocean are encouraged to watch this video resource to explore pathways for establishing durable, equitable, and effective MPA networks built to last.
