In celebration of International Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Day, WIOMPAN hosted a highly successful webinar themed “Ocean Protection Needs Human Connection.” Drawing over 200 experts, site managers, and marine practitioners from across the region and the globe, the event underscored a critical reality: designating MPAs on paper is simply not enough. To achieve ambitious global milestones like the 30×30 target, the conservation community must prioritize robust governance and sustained investment in its frontline personnel.
The narrative of the session moved decisively beyond the concept of “paper parks.” Discussions emphasized that true marine protection must pair action-oriented management with clear governance to deliver both ecological resilience and tangible socio-economic benefits for local communities. With the Western Indian Ocean region currently overseeing 550,000 square kilometers of MPAs and over 300 Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs), addressing critical staffing and resource gaps is paramount. Participants highlighted professional certifications, such as WIO-COMPAS, as vital tools for empowering marine managers and rangers.
Ultimately, protecting connected marine ecosystems relies on the power of unified networks. By championing transboundary cooperation, shared learning, and co-management models, WIOMPAN continues to bridge the gap between human connection and ocean preservation.
