On June 14, 2026, the Olive Ridley Project – Kenya successfully hosted the 7th Diani Sea Turtle Festival in celebration of World Sea Turtle Day. This free, educational event brought together diverse stakeholders to champion marine conservation and enhance public ocean literacy.
Highlighting the importance of community-led ocean management, the festival sponsored the attendance of 264 students and 24 teachers from eight local schools. Furthermore, 24 Sea Turtle Ambassadors from eight local fishing communities played a critical role by leading science communication and educational activities. The event also served as a vibrant regional networking hub, with fourteen different organizations in attendance to showcase their environmental initiatives.
Beyond the festival, the Olive Ridley Project – Kenya continues to drive impactful biophysical research and outreach, having empowered over 130 fishers and identified more than 800 green and 90 hawksbill turtles through targeted Photo-ID monitoring.
