The Vezo Miray Nosy Barren Association and Blue Ventures have been monitoring sea turtles’ nesting sites across the MPA of Barren Isles, Melaky region, Madagascar. This initiative aims to understand the dynamics of marine turtle nesting within the MPA and to guide the development of effective management measures to protect them.
In 2025, the data collector recorded up to 41 nests of marine turtles, 2668 eggs and two species of marine turtles in the Barren Island. The most of marine turtles are the green turtles which cover 95% of the Nests and the hawksbill is 5%.
Beyond counting nests, this activity bolsters turtle protection through continuous patrols conducted by the data collectors during the monitoring period.
This data informs conservation measures planned by Vezo Miray Nosy Barren, including: increasing community surveillance, controlling camping in potential turtle nesting areas during nesting seasons, raising awareness among the fishing community, collaborating with authorities for effective law enforcement, and implementing permanent closures in the potential nesting zone during the campaign.
