The KwaZulu-Natal research node of the National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NITheCS) is inviting applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow position. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary project focused on studying the coupled dynamics of human and natural ecosystems within KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The role involves developing mathematical and computational models that explore interactions between agriculture, hydrology, land use, socio-economic factors, and ecosystems. The fellow will analyze environmental datasets, apply data analytics, and contribute to research publications, aiming for 3-4 papers annually. Additionally, the position includes co-supervision of postgraduate students and participation in workshops, stakeholder engagement, and interdisciplinary meetings.
Candidates should have recently completed a PhD in fields such as Applied Mathematics, Environmental Modelling, Ecology, Hydrology, or related quantitative disciplines. Strong skills in mathematical modeling, computational simulation, and data analysis with tools like Python, R, or MATLAB are required. Experience in socio-ecological systems modeling, satellite imagery analysis, or machine learning is desirable. The fellow will be based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and work within a collaborative team to develop an integrated framework for sustainable resource management.
