WIOMPAN Regional Meeting 2025: Strengthening Leadership and Regional Coordination Across the WIO

The Western Indian Ocean Marine Protected Areas Network (WIOMPAN) held its 2025 Regional Meeting on 28 September 2025 in Mombasa, bringing together Country Chapter Chairs from across the region. Representatives attended from Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Comoros, Madagascar, Réunion, and Seychelles, with Mauritius participating as they formalise their national chapter. Somalia—where early work is underway to establish a WIOMPAN chapter—was the only country not represented.

The meeting reaffirmed WIOMPAN’s role as the region’s practitioner-led platform where national leaders collaborate, share learning, and guide implementation toward the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) Target 3. This year’s theme, “strengthening the ties that bind,” captured the network’s commitment to fostering deeper coordination among MPA and LMMA practitioners across the Western Indian Ocean.
