Opportunity for PhD funding – The BRIDGES Research Program launches its 2026 call

Objective: to train a new generation of experts capable of understanding, managing, and transforming marine social-ecological systems in the southwestern Indian Ocean (SWIO).

The BRIDGES- Fisheries and Biodiversity in the Western Indian Ocean Research Program will fund at least nine three-year PhD positions, each supported by a €20,000 research budget.

Selected PhD projects must align with one of the BRIDGES’ scientific challenges and contribute to advances in at least one of the study sites, or propose comparative approaches across multiple sites. Topics may fall within a single discipline or span several fields, but the overall PhD cohort will be multidisciplinary.

Future doctoral candidates will benefit from an integrated training programme combining scientific instruction, personal development, and collaborative co-construction workshops.

Doctoral candidates and their supervisors will be required to sign the BRIDGES Code of Good Practice to ensure an ethical, collaborative working framework aligned with the programme’s principles.

Deadline for submitting PhD projects: February 13, 2026 (12:00 p.m., CET)

Publication of selected PhD projects results: March 31, 2026

Start of contracts: October 31, 2026 at the latest
