Nature Seychelles has been featured in, “Back to Blue: Indian Ocean – On the Frontline,” an initiative by Economist Impact and The Nippon Foundation. This series shines a light on science-driven solutions to the pressing challenges our oceans face, positioning the Western Indian Ocean as a critical climate frontline and highlighting small island nations like Seychelles as key players in finding solutions.
In this spotlight, Nature Seychelles’ coral restoration efforts take centre stage, featuring insights from its Chief Executive, Dr. Nirmal Shah. With decades of evidence-based conservation, the Reef Rescuers project has been reviving damaged reefs through innovative techniques successfully propagating thousands of coral fragments.
A standout achievement is the Assisted Recovery of Corals facility, which cultivates corals in controlled environments to boost their survival rates and enhance reef resilience, especially as bleaching events become more frequent. Nature Seychelles is also dedicated to sharing knowledge, training practitioners from across the region to spread their frontline expertise.
The feature also highlights the significant ocean funding gap, pointing out that while reefs are vital for fisheries, tourism, and coastal protection, they continue to be underfunded.
