A PhD position is available at Stellenbosch University to investigate the sources of ‘blue’ carbon in South African estuaries, focusing on seagrass meadows and salt marshes using isotope analysis and environmental DNA. This research aims to improve understanding of carbon contributions from different vegetation types, aiding in climate change mitigation, carbon offset schemes, and ecosystem restoration. The project is led by Prof. Sophie von der Heyden’s lab, a leading marine research group in Africa, offering training in molecular ecology, genomics, and blue carbon science.
