MARCOP, an endorsed UN Ocean Decade Programme led by WIOMSA and Macquarie University, is participating in the New Call for Decade Actions No. 10. Focused on equitable and resilient marine conservation in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) by 2030, MARCOP is a regional partnership that supports evidence-based decision-making, strengthens conservation management and connectivity, and builds capacity across the WIO.
MARCOP welcomes projects based in the WIO and around the African continent aligned with marine protected area management effectiveness, policy-relevant environmental and management solutions, and stakeholder improvement of marine planning and governance.
Specifically, projects focused on the following 5 thematic areas are welcome:
- Data and Information Systems: Strengthening science-policy integration and ensuring marine conservation is embedded in national plans.
- Marine Conservation Coverage and Connectivity: Supporting countries to expand and connect conservation areas so that ecosystems are better linked and resilient.
- Management Effectiveness and Equity: Closely working with MPAs and LMMAs to improve governance and ensure that benefits reach both ecosystems and communities.
- Recognition and Inclusion of IPLC Rights: Ensuring Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities are full partners in conservation, with their rights and knowledge integrated into planning.
- Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning:
The call for projects and contributions runs until 31st January 2026. For more information on how to apply, visit: https://oceandecade.org/call-for-decade-actions-10-2025/
