Remarkable leaders and scientists in our communities have tirelessly worked to establish grassroot impact in marine science, education, community involvement, innovations, and capacity-development in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region. Today, we proudly stand on their shoulders, honouring their legacy, vision and commitment for the future. We pay homage to their contributions spanning research, teaching, training, mentorship and community engagement.
Join us in celebrating the trailblazers who have paved the way for the next generations, ensuring that they have the opportunity to learn, discover, and dream big for our One Ocean, One Future. Through their groundbreaking work and leadership, these leaders and scientists have created pathways for curiosity, innovation, and exploration, resulting in a Legacy of Science, Community and Impact.
This is a call to identify and celebrate individuals in the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) member countries, which includes: Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Reunion, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa and Tanzania to be considered for the legacy feature. WIOMSA will honour these individuals in the upcoming 13th Scientific Symposium and beyond through a captivating “Legacy Feature,” showcasing their visionary spirit. This feature will spotlight a diverse array of individuals, including posthumous recognition of those who have made significant contributions.
We invite you to nominate individuals based on the following Nomination Criteria
- Significant contributions are understood as impactful contributions to marine science and community engagement, or education within their field. For example, leaders who have made strides in marine conservation, policy development, sustainable resource use practices, innovation, community outreach and education
- Nominees can be from diverse backgrounds (E.g. scientist, citizen scientist, community leader, ship/boat captain, government/non-governmental organization worker etc.)
- Does not necessarily have to be a WIOMSA member
