WIOMSA, in collaboration with the Pew Charitable Trusts, and IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) is pleased to invite you to a webinar on Enhancing Seagrass Conservation in the Western Indian Ocean
Date: 31st July 2024
Time: 1400-1600 HRS EAT
Webinar Overview:
This virtual meeting aims to bring together key stakeholders from the WIO region involved in seagrass conservation, knowledge generation, and the blue economy to take stock and prepare a seagrass status report. The meeting will feature the Western Indian Ocean Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Conservation Ocean Resilience (WIOCOR) project, Pew’s seagrass mapping project, and other regional partners to discuss intervention areas and regional priorities for seagrass conservation and management. Stakeholders, including The Pew Charitable Trusts and partners, RECOS, the Dugong MOU staff, and colleagues from the IUCN Mediterranean and West Africa Offices, will share their seagrass conservation initiatives and identify collaboration opportunities.
WIO-Sea Grass Projects
The WIOCOR project, launched by IUCN under the Great Blue Wall Initiative, aims for the effective, equitable, and inclusive long-term conservation of coastal biodiversity, focusing on seagrass beds and their associated ecosystem services. This project targets Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Tanzania, promoting and strengthening seagrass’s contribution to socio-ecological resilience and the development of a blue economy in the region.
WIOMSA, as the knowledge implementing partner of the WIOCOR project and regional partner of The Pew Charitable Trusts’ seagrass mapping project, supports developing a comprehensive status report on seagrass in the region and builds local and regional capacity for seagrass conservation and management.
Webinar Objectives:
- Facilitate the exchange of information and experiences on seagrass research, monitoring, and management initiatives across the WIO region.
- Identify key knowledge gaps, research needs, and priority actions for seagrass conservation and restoration.
- Initiate the development of a comprehensive status report on seagrass ecosystems in the WIO region.
- Identify priority seascapes for deploying blue economy activities that support seagrass conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
