As part of the MAEO project (Observatory of Elasmobranchs within the Mascarene Archipelago), ARBRE association and the FFESSM commissions “Underwater Environment and Bio” and “Underwater Photo-Video”, in partnership with La Réunion Marine Protected Area and Sciences Réunion, are launching an international underwater photo contest on the theme “Elasmobranchs and large pelagics“.
This contest, open to all underwater photographers, is the first underwater photo contest organized on a regional scale, bringing together all the countries of the Western Indian Ocean basin: La Reunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues, Mayotte, Comoros, Seychelles, Madagascar, South Africa and East Africa (from Somalia to Mozambique). It will highlight the biodiversity of elasmobranchs (rays and sharks) on a regional scale and raise awareness around this exceptional fauna. Indeed, the contest will be associated with the Science Festival, which will take place in La Reunion from November 10 to 27, 2022, and during which a conference for the general public will be organized presenting the MAEO project and its first results. The photos will be classified into two categories, amateur and expert, and submitted to a jury. The photos will be distributed on ARBRE association’s website as well as on various sites of the Science Festival in La Reunion, in order to allow the general public and schoolchildren to participate, and to elect their “Coup de coeur” prize. The vote will be done via an application available from a computer or smartphone, the link of which will be will soon be posted on the ARBRE association’s website and FB page.
