The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development will be from 2021 to 2030 , with the theme The Ocean We Need for the Future We Want. The Decade will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a new foundation, across the science-policy interface, to strengthen the management of our oceans and coasts for the benefit of humanity.
In preparation for the launch of the decade in the region the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation) in conjunction with WIOMSA (Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association) are organising an ocean science research competition which is aimed at creating awareness of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
The focus is on identifying regional issues and how they can be addressed during the decade using science and in particular how Africa can contribute to the decade.
The competition is open to university students and early career scientists. Click on either the ENGLISH or FRENCH version of the poster announcements for more information on eligibility and how to enter the competition.
Registration forms and further information on the competition are available via email from Rachael Nakeno (r.nakeno@unesco.org), Mika Odido (m.odido@unesco.org) or oceans.nairobi@unesco.org.
