SCALABLE Call for Proposals: Training Courses to Support Science-Policy Integration in the WIO

The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) invites proposals for organizing training courses as part of the Sustainable Blue Future in the Western Indian Ocean – Institutional Strengthening through Science, Capacity, and Assimilation for a Sustainable Blue FutureSCALABLE” program (2023-2026).

This competitive call aims to enhance the science-policy interface in the WIO region, aligning with important initiatives such as the Africa Blue Economy Strategy, the Global Biodiversity Framework, the Paris Agreement, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Three (3) training courses will be funded on the following topics:

  1. Systematic Marine Conservation Planning
This training aims to build the capacity of WIO countries to implement data-driven strategies for identifying priority conservation areas, optimizing resource use, and developing actionable plans aligned with the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) targets and SDG 14. It focuses on enhancing evidence-based conservation approaches that bridge the gap between research and policy.
  2. Science Communication
This training seeks to promote effective science communication to ensure that research informs policymaking and reaches diverse audiences. Proposals should focus on building capacity for translating complex scientific data into accessible formats, such as policy briefs and public engagement campaigns, thereby elevating marine conservation issues in policy discussions.
  3. Co- design
This training aims to develop competencies in engaging local communities, scientists, and policymakers in creating research and policy solutions. The SCALABLE program prioritizes collaborative approaches that ensure scientific outputs are relevant, actionable, and responsive to regional challenges, fostering ownership of conservation initiatives.
