This is a reminder for the WIOMSA talk on 3rd September 2010 at 2:30pm at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute Conference hall. The speaker of the day will be Dr. Nyawira Muthiga and she will be sharing her experiences from the regional sea cucumber project. The attached flyer provides details of the talk.

The purpose of these members meetings is to promote interactions and collaborations between WIOMSA members. We hope to be able to have a talk from members involved in WIOMSA funded research during each meeting. More information on WIOMSA activities may be obtained from the website www.wiomsa.org

In recognition of the fact that WIOMSA members are distributed throughout Kenya and several are unable to make it to the bi-monthly meetings, following the meeting a short one page brief of project highlights and discussion points will be circulated to members to provide those who did not attend with an overview of discussions that transpired.

Submit an application if you are a prospective leader from a non-European threshold or developing country (see list of countries <http://www.humboldt-foundation.de/pls/web/wt_show.text_page?p_text_id=1125828> ) working in the field of climate protection and resource conservation in academia, business or administration in your country. Applicants must provide a clearly visible leadership potential either by experience in a first leadership position or be able to provide appropriate references. They must also have completed their first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent academic degree) less than 12 years prior to the start of the fellowship (1 September 2011) with outstanding results. They must also hold a further academic or professional qualification (Master’s, PhD, LL.M., MBA etc.) or have extensive professional experience in a leadership role (at least 48 months at the time of application). Furthermore, they are expected to have gained initial practical experience through involvement in projects related to climate protection and resource conservation. The fellowship will enable the recipients to conduct a research-related project of their own choice with hosts in Germany whom they are free to choose themselves.

The programme, which is being funded under the International Climate Protection Initiative by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, includes a preparatory intensive language course in Germany, a several-week introductory seminar, a two-week training course and a final meeting in Berlin. These activities will enable you to gain additional insights into academic, social, cultural, economic and political life in Germany.

In addition to applicants who have been trained in the natural and engineering sciences, candidates who have been engaged in legal, economic and societal issues relating to climate change are encouraged to apply for this programme. Every year, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is granting up to 20 International Climate Protection Fellowships to prospective leaders from the countries named. The programme is currently scheduled to run until 2012.

Scientists at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on 11 August that there is no doubt that higher global temperatures were behind the floods.

“There’s no doubt that clearly the climate change is contributing, a major contributing factor,” Ghassem Asrar, director of the World Climate Research Programme and the WMO, said in an interview with Climatewire.

A pioneering conservation and development initiative in Madagascar has become the first conservation project in the country to receive support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Blue Ventures has secured a UNFPA partnership to continue its public health work in southern Madagascar, supporting villagers to develop strategies to safeguard the threatened marine environment on which their livelihoods and culture depend.

Working with regional health institutions and NGOs, the project provides clinical sexual and reproductive health services to 24 villages along the south western coast of Madagascar. These services empower and enable individuals to make their own reproductive health choices, and protect themselves against sexually transmitted infections.

Blue Ventures’ conservation director, Dr. Alasdair Harris, said: “The UNFPA’s support is a hugely symbolic step. A human rights and health based organisation is supporting a marine conservation charity for the first time because of its recognition of the inter-relationship between marine resource sustainability, maternal and infant health, and population growth.”

The news has received a similarly warm welcome from the organisation’s clinical technician. “It’s wonderful news and great recognition for the project,” said Fanja Rakotozafy. “Now the sexual and reproductive health team here is part of the UNFPA family, we have the support to expand and develop our work within Velondriake, the country’s largest marine conservation region. This is good for the community here.”

The UN’s Population Fund promotes universal access to reproductive healthcare, and strategically selects NGO partners where appropriate. Access to reproductive healthcare in southern Madagascar is lagging behind the rest of the country. Blue Ventures’ established presence in the area makes it an attractive partner.

Victor Rakoto, the UN Population Fund assistant representative in Madagascar, says: “The UNFPA has found that collaboration between the two organisations could significantly increase access to reproductive health services including family planning services in the targeted region. Another very important development is that this partnership will make a link between the interventions in population and environmental protection.”

Overfishing and temperature-related coral-bleaching have rendered ancient fishing practices ineffective at feeding the rapidly growing local population in Andavadoaka. An influx of migrants using destructive fishing practices has added to pressure on fish stocks.

In this area of rural Madagascar women typically have their first child in their early teens. Family sizes far exceed the national average of 5 children, and are estimated at 6.7 children per family.
